I made some pretty amazing mistakes lately as well, just to name a few..
1. Instead of putting the +30 hp upgrade to my IDS I somehow managed to salvage it instead - to materials. GG, what was I thinking?
2. While selling stuff to the merchant I was clicking a bit too fast and accidently sold one of my perfect req 9 golds as well.
3. After I got bored of my totem axe I decided to make an equivalent of it, so I crafted the Factions endgame Katana and put the mods on it. Shortly after that I transfered the weapon to one of other characters for pvp play. And yes of course, I deleted it together with the pvp character later.
Apart from that, I had pretty good success in the pve overall so I stopped worrying over such silly mistakes. I can live just as well without my gold weapon and I also purchased a new totem axe. As for the IDS, been trying to farm a new one for the last few weeks but no luck so far.
So what can be learned from the mistakes I made?
1. When upgrading weapons, always double check what are you doing. Since the new upgrade options window that came with Nightfall upgrading is a bit different now. You can't really tell if you're salvaging or upgrading your weapon at the first look at the message that pops up. Just don't rush.
2. A good way of preventing your worthvile items of being accidently sold to merchant is putting them at the end of the inventory with a non-selable item (like a festival hat) in front of them. You won't be able to sell anything after that item with fast clicking this way.
3. Using pve weapons on a pvp character can be a pain since pvp characters can get deleted often and so does all of their inventory. Chances of this happening are a bit smaller now than back in the days when you had to delete a pvp character everytime you had to change a rune or a weapon.
Bottom line: Don't rush too much on everything. It can save a day sometimes and you won't even notice it.

I never customize caster weapons. Since the 20% damage doesn't apply to skill usage, it doesn't make much sense to me to customize them. Do you guys customize caster weapons ?

*looks at the warrior skillbar on the guildwars prophecies box*, now that's uber.
Went into a pug group wayyy back then with a lvl 20 necro with presear armor doing Thirsty River mission. Think the guy died in like 1 or 2 hits everytime.
Typical mistakes mentioned already concerning the merchant and etc.
Faction farmed like mad to keep HzH free to everyone for many months. Lesson, lots of faction farming makes you wanna quit guildwars, which I did for 3 months.
Only had 3k gold back in the old days, didn't know what fow was, saw balthazar, *thinks to myself, hey what does this do, must be something good if I'm paying 1k to get in*, paid, got owned. Lesson, never talk to strangers.

learning curve :)
Ok. I concider myself to be a very skilled player. I can take my warrior into any situation can have confidence that I'll accomplish the mission/quest objectives.
But it was a long, long, long road to get here!
Wish I had a screen shot of every mistake I made along the way....
Any time somebody laughs at a Wammo, it's probably my fault....
My advice to all players...FOR THE LOVE OF GW -CHECK YOUR SKILLS BEFORE YOU LEAVE TOWN ALONE!!

There is just one thing I like to point out.
When deleting a character: GIVE YOUR FULL ATTENSION
My friend deleted his PvE warrior by accident and lost 3 sets of 15k armor.
I almost lost my necro because I wasnt too careful (Necro is my most beloved char)
so to sum it up when deleting characters STOP EVERYTHING YOU ARE DOING AND FOCUS ON DELETING THE CHAR YOU WANT.

-- Scratch that --
I once lent my account to my friend for about 3 months, then he lent to his friend who was a hardcore-gamer. I got angry at him for lending it to his friend, and i took the account back by force, they weren't going to give it back.
Anyway, in my rage i deleted his level 20 warrior with 15k armour :l
Which i did nothing at all, except do other stuff to achieve, god knows how much money and golds there were on that

I deleted 2 of my chars, both would turn a year old on the day birthday gifts were first introduced. Had I thought that veteran rewards would be character-wide, as opposed to account, I would probably have kept them. Why I deleted them because back then there was no other way to unlock skills for pvp use other than thru pve characters.

For extra measure, 1 or 2 more confirmation windows should be added in addition to the window where we type in individual letters of the avatar name!

when i was doing a desolation mission (the one where you have to tame the warm queen), after i finished almost everything, i ran after 100g that droped on the yellow sands... ya and of curse i didnt flag the heros/henchies either
x___x
oh ya about character deleting, i once deleted a mule worth ~200k. i was actually playing some HA with guild, and the mule was taking over the pvp slot. so i gave all the items to my guildie, played, put all the items back on the NEW mule. the day after it i was gonna go AB and deleted the mule to make a diffrent class. of curse i remembered that the mule is worth some cash only AFTER deleting him lol

Yesterday's act of stupidity:
Having finally decided that the 1.5K Kurzick thong on my female warrior was gross enough to warrant upgrading, I shelled out for the 15K variant (paying cash for the amber - a sub-act of stupidity in it's own right).
Problem the first: the rest of my set's dyed pre-Nightfall, so there's no way I can get it to match without re-dying everything.
Problem the second: it turns out that no matter what you do, you can't make a 1.5K Kurzick top match the 15K pants, colour-wise (and I really prefer the 1.5K top in this case). This costs me an additional premium in silver dyes as I try different mixes.
So what did I do? I went for the other sleeveless Warrior top, the Istani shirt. Good thing it's just a 1K set, right? Well, it would be if I hadn't persuaded myself that the only way to make it match was to dye it black!
Buyer's remorse now points out that (a) the glossy black of the dye doesn't match the matte of the undyable cloth parts of the Kurzick gear, and that (b) from the rear she looks like she's wearing a t-shirt with her plate mail gloves. Still, I've switched my cape onto "always", so she looks tolerable until I decide to give up and just buy the 15K Kurz top already. Paying cash for amber again, I'm sure.

I don't understand why people think customizing items is a bad idea. If you're using it to deal damage, it should be customized, 100%.
stupidest thing I've ever done:
When I finally decided what armor I wanted for my monk (15k luxon), bought all the jades for it (1.3k each), bought the armor, then spent about another 50k dying and re-dying it until I found something I liked.

First daft thing i did was after my first UW run with a trapper team. Sold an ecto i got to a merchant for 200 gold. Took me a while to realise i could've got a lot more for it.
Secondly i accidently deleted my PvE mesmer who completed factions 3 days after its release.. His name was too similar to my PvP slot.
